Mars
Mars, Incorporated is a leading consumer goods manufacturer with a global footprint. A family-owned company of well-known brands, Mars sources multiple forest-risk commodities for its products, including beef, cocoa, palm oil, pulp, paper, timber, and soy.
Mars has committed to eliminating deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses in its soy, beef, and cocoa supply chains by 2025. Mars has also maintained a deforestation-free palm oil supply chain since 2020 and remains committed to stopping deforestation and forest degradation in its pulp, paper, and timber supply chains. To achieve these commitments, Mars has aligned expectations for its suppliers with the Accountability Framework, including its engagement in landscape-level actions to support suppliers on its overall performance in line with the Framework. They have also used the Framework to set internal policies for how natural ecosystems are protected on sites and land they own for its factories and operations.
In addition to these efforts, Mars has also established senior level accountability around its no-deforestation goals and sustainability more broadly, as recommended by the AFi, providing the internal incentives necessary to support success. Mars is also a member of leading industry groups such as the Consumer Goods Forum Forest Positive Coalition, which has embedded the Accountability Framework’s guidance into its commodity roadmaps, KPIs, and reporting metrics.
“At Mars, we have used the Accountability Framework to help develop our targets, strategies and policies for our deforestation- and conversion-free commitments in key commodity supply chains. We also collaborate regularly with the AFi as a key partner in many of our collaboration spaces. The consensus of the AFi Coalition behind the Framework is extremely valuable to us, as it gives us clarity and confidence in what is expected by the NGO community.”
