Learn more about site establishment, respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, and workers’ rights.
Responsible supply chains start with good production practices on the ground. From site establishment to the management of day-to-day operations, companies that produce commodities need to ensure they are free from deforestation, conversion, and human rights violations. They also need to credibly demonstrate this status to their buyers through comprehensive and reliable data collection.
There are many different tools and approaches that upstream companies can use to assess and address their impacts and risks. This includes tools to assess high conservation value (HCV) and high carbon stock (HCS) forests. Companies should also undertake robust due diligence processes to ensure their operations and supply chains respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, including securing free, prior, and informed consent where necessary, and respecting workers’ rights.
By utilising widely accepted, robust tools and management practices, companies can fulfil their ethical and legal responsibilities, reduce reputational risks, and comply with local and international laws.
The AFi e-learning platform offers training on managing commodity production
The AFi e-learning platform is an online resource designed to help companies learn about the Accountability Framework and how its guidance can help them protect forests, natural ecosystems, and human rights. The platform features modules highlighting the key actions that companies need to take to achieve more responsible supply chains. This includes a dedicated module on managing commodity production, specialised for companies that produce or directly source agricultural and forestry products.
What’s included in the Manage commodity production module?
The Manage commodity production module features a short video introduction outlining the role that responsibly managed production has in ensuring fully responsible commodity supply chains. Importantly, it also features three lessons with interactive content, expert videos, and knowledge checks, focused on responsible site establishment, site management, and environmental remediation and restoration.
