Take stock of company practices with the AFi Self-assessment Tool
25 February 2025
The revised AFi tool helps companies and service providers assess company policies, internal systems, and supply chain management practices in line with the Accountability Framework.
The AFi today has released an updated version of our Self-assessment Tool. The resource helps companies better understand how to apply the Accountability Framework’s guidance on responsible agricultural and forestry commodity supply chains.
It enables companies to benchmark their existing policies and practices against the Framework and to identify areas for improvement which can be addressed by following the Framework's guidance.
The assessment is organised around the Accountability Framework's 12 Core Principles, which are grouped into key action areas. The tool also provides a template for developing an action plan for closing gaps identified through the assessment.
A resource for companies
Designed for internal use, companies and service providers can use the tool to evaluate the strength and effectiveness of company policies, practices, and systems. It also helps companies identify potential weaknesses and prioritise action in line with the Framework’s good practices.
Many companies have found value in using the AFi Self-assessment Tool to deepen their companies’ alignment with the Framework. Palm oil leader Musim Mas, for example, broadened the scope of its sustainability policy after evaluating its deforestation-free tools and systems using the AFi tool. Following the assessment, BMW Group harmonised specific elements of its due diligence process, including within its supplier sustainability policy. In addition, AFi delivery partners such as Anthesis, South Pole, and others use the tool to guide their work in supporting companies to follow the Framework.
“The Accountability Framework has provided us with a valuable basis to deal with risk in forest and agriculture supply chains,” said Vanessa Buchberger, Senior Expert, Sustainable Supply Chain Management, BMW Group. “The Self-assessment Tool in particular helped us to benchmark our activities against best practices.”
About the Accountability Framework
The Accountability Framework is a common approach to achieve supply chains that are protective of forests, other natural ecosystems, and human rights. Companies can use the Framework as a guide when setting responsible supply chain goals and commitments, developing implementation systems, and reporting on progress.
It also supports companies in creating the necessary internal systems and procedures necessary to comply with existing and emerging regulations and voluntary obligations related to supply chain due diligence, risk management, and disclosure.
