White paper: Strengthening synergies between JREDD+ and sustainable supply chains to protect tropical forests

The AFi, Conservation International, and Proforest analysed how to better integrate JREDD+ programmes with sustainable supply chain strategies for stronger outcomes.
Corporate efforts to address deforestation and other impacts of agricultural and forestry commodity production often overlap with government- or locally-led initiatives in sourcing areas.
Many governments address these impacts through jurisdictional REDD+ (JREDD+) programmes, which fund forest protection by linking reduced emissions carbon payments or credits.
Despite shared goals, these two approaches have developed separately, with limited engagement between JREDD+ programmes and companies seeking to address deforestation in their supply chains.
About the white paper
The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi), with support from Conservation International and Proforest, published a white paper titled: Strengthening synergies between JREDD+ and sustainable supply chains to protect tropical forests.
The paper analyses frameworks and standards, and draws on insights from case studies and interviews. It explores ways to increase corporate engagement and investment in JREDD+, whilst helping JREDD+ programmes to support companies in meeting their supply chain sustainability goals. The paper highlights opportunities to better align corporate sustainability efforts and JREDD+ to incentivise investment and unlock greater impact than either approach could achieve on its own.
The paper recommends that:
Supply chain frameworks recognise and incentivise jurisdictional engagement by:
- Increasing recognition of jurisdictional performance in DCF policies and frameworks
- Increasing recognition of landscape actions and performance in climate frameworks
- Considering the implications of allowances for JREDD+ credit usage in future revisions of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) Guidance
JREDD+ programmes support corporate action to address deforestation by:
- Incentivising company participation in JREDD+ readiness
- Creating shared monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems for jurisdictional and corporate accounting
- Reconciling carbon claims to support supply chain decarbonisation
