RESPONSIBLE FARM AND FORESTRY PRODUCTION

The Accountability Framework provides detailed guidance on how to establish and operate production sites in a manner that protects forests, natural ecosystems, and human rights. It also provides best practices for restoration or other remedy in the case of negative social or environmental impacts.
Producers and primary processors are most directly responsible for implementing responsible production practices. Traders, downstream buyers, and financial institutions also have critical roles to play. They can ensure that their sourcing policies, supplier engagement practices, and financing activities require, monitor, and support responsible production on the ground.
Responsible production entails three components:
- Site establishment: Land acquisition, land-use planning, and site development are protective of forests, other natural ecosystems, and the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities (Core Principle 7).
- Site operation: Production units are managed to ensure long-term protection of the sites’ conservation and cultural values (Core Principle 8) and full respect for the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and workers (Core Principle 2)
- Remediation: Restoration or other remedy is provided where production activities have caused or contributed to adverse environmental or human rights impacts (Core Principle 9).
