Commitment

13 December 2022

A public statement of intention to meet specific goals or targets.

  • In the context of the Accountability Framework, commitments refer to statements of intention by companies (including supply chain companies and financial institutions) related to the protection of forests and other natural ecosystems, human rights, or other environmental and social values.
  • Commitments may also be titled or referred to as policies, pledges, or other terms. However, commitments are distinct from the operational policies or procedures (eg, sourcing codes, supplier requirements, and standard operating procedures) by which companies may implement their commitments or sustainability initiatives. Commitments are broader, more normative, and take a multi-year view, whereas operational policies and procedures tend to focus on specific implementation details, parameters, or requirements.
  • Commitments may be company-wide or specific to certain commodities, regions, or business units. They may be topic-specific or address multiple environmental and social topics.
