Manage commodity supply chains with the AFi's webinars

15 marzo 2024

Learn how to source commodities, engage suppliers, and collaborate for your goals

Companies buying commodities are more focused than ever before on making responsible choices. With increased pressure from consumers and legislators, companies are seeking ways to manage their supply chains to meet key climate, nature, and supply chain goals.

To do this, companies can use the Accountability Framework to take three levels of action:

  1. Sourcing commodities: Companies should ensure the product volumes they purchase are produced in supply chains that are free from deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses.

  2. Engaging suppliers: Companies need to establish and strengthen their relationships with their suppliers, as well as set up systems to manage compliance.

  3. Collaborating in landscapes: Companies should collaborate with others sourcing their materials from the same landscapes and jurisdictions to maximise their impact.

To this end, the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) has recently published a three-part webinar series on the topic of managing agricultural and forestry commodity supply chains. See more details about each webinar below.

Webinar 1: Sourcing deforestation- and conversion-free agricultural and forestry commodities

In our first session, you’ll learn about the approaches to sourcing commodity volumes free from deforestation and conversion. This includes companies verifying the origins of the products they purchase.

With speakers from Efeca (a member of the AFi Coalition) and Nestlé, you’ll hear perspectives from a company and a service provider. The panel touches on strategies such as farm-level monitoring, certification programmes, and risk assessment.

Webinar 2: Engaging suppliers to achieve responsible supply chains

In the second session of this series, you’ll learn how companies can engage with their network of suppliers to achieve supply chains free from deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses.

The speaker panel includes sustainability consultancy Anthesis, international beverage company JDE Peet’s, and UK-based not-for-profit Proforest (a member of the AFi Coalition). Our speakers outline good practice strategies for supplier engagement, and how to translate corporate no-deforestation, no-conversion, and human rights commitments into action on-the-ground.

Webinar 3: Collaborating for sustainability in sourcing landscapes

Addressing commodity-driven deforestation, conversion, and human rights abuses on a systemic basis is often outside the scope of one single company. The final instalment in this series dives into how companies can act beyond their own supply chains and address impacts at the landscape and jurisdictional levels.

With speakers from the Indonesia-based Earth-Centered Economy Coalition, Nestlé, and multi-stakeholder group Tropical Forest Alliance, the webinar features discussions on the role of landscape, jurisdictional, and sectoral initiatives in achieving corporate sustainability goals.
